Welcome to the Park Avenue Suite. This is a special feature on the self-guided tour, just for those who are in the Park Avenue Suite and can’t get enough local history.
In 1916, Joseph Cotton’s work as a corporate lawyer for Rockefeller took him to New York.
The family moved with him, buying a condo on the Upper East Side in a newly constructed high-rise at 1000 Park Avenue in 1916.
They would later move to 480 Park Avenue between Midtown and the Upper East Side. When a new condo high-rise was constructed in 1929, Mrs. Cotton would live out her life at 1000 Park Avenue until 1972.
The family kept the Cotton Mansion in Duluth as a summer home to beat the heat in the summer. And they came here every summer until 1940.
In 1940, the home was sold to the Tweed family and then subsequently donated to the university. It became the conservatory for the university and was called Tweed Hall.
