Built in 1889, the building that is now The Oliver Inn originally served as Duluth’s City Hall, designed by renowned architect Oliver Green Traphagen, and sat directly above the Rathskeller speakeasy. Over the years, it evolved through various uses before being lovingly transformed into a boutique inn in early 2022.
During restoration, the team stayed true to Traphagen’s original blueprints, preserving historic details like high ceilings, original windows, and classic woodwork, while blending in thoughtful modern refinements. Each of the 18 uniquely designed rooms highlights Duluth’s local history by honoring the people and stories that shaped the city, from Swedish immigrants and industrial pioneers to cultural advocates and city-builders.
The Oliver Inn features 13 unique suites, each one thoughtfully restored to reflect Duluth’s history while offering the comfort of a modern stay. Set in the city’s original 1889 City Hall building, these suites blend original woodwork, tall ceilings, and historic charm with updated amenities like smart TVs, Nespresso machines, and rain showers. From cozy king and queen rooms to the grand Chamber Suite with fireplaces, a skylight, and multiple sitting areas, each space has its own story and style. Guests also enjoy access to the cedar sauna, fitness center, and the Rathskeller cocktail lounge located beneath the inn.
