Welcome to the Vermilion Suite. This is a special feature on the self-guided audio tour, just for those who are staying with us in the Vermilion Suite and can’t get enough local Duluth history.
This room’s namesake is an homage to the Vermilion Iron Range, some 50 miles north of Duluth, as an indirect source of Duluth’s early prosperity, including Joseph Cotton. The Vermilion Range is one of three historic mining districts with deep deposits of iron ore in Minnesota, the others being the Mesabi Range and the Cuyuna Range.

Framed in the shadow box is an original 1893 geological map survey from the state of Minnesota that covers the Vermilion Iron Range ore deposits. The survey was commissioned the year before the landmark case between the Merritt brothers and Rockefeller, which was represented by Joseph Cotton.
